When young kamikaze pilots failed to complete their missions upon the unconditional surrender of Japanese forces in 1945, many young men returned home to never find peace in their souls. Mounting customized motorbikes painted with patriotic slogans, the most restless of them started riding aimlessly around Japan, making noise and disturbing traffic, eventually earning the moniker 'running-out-of-control-tribe' or Bosozoku in Japanese.
As the subculture transitioned through many phases and generations, in the 80s and 90s, a chapter known as 'Ladies' emerged and quickly attracted fearless women who took on the open road with style and attitude. This project takes a fresh look a the women who long remained in the shadows of the Bosozoku world, finally granting these speed addicts the attention they deserve, capturing the energy, movement, and style that defines their unique contribution to this subculture. This highly visual book delves into the lives of Bosozoku Speed Queens and their custom bikes from that era.
Algography is a new and rising creative genre embracing generative AI as a unique and limitless canvas for creative expression. 影 ・Kage ・ Shadow, implies hidden emotion in Japan and describes someone with depth in their personality and experience. It is an aspect of traditional Wabi Sabi aesthetics where an imperfection is purposely introduced to a work of art to avoid offending the divine creator with human creative hubris.
黒 幕 ・Kuro Maku ・Black Curtain, a code name for a Yakuza fixer who works behind the scenes.
